Types of Referrals
- Reported: Teachers, counselors, administrators, parents or guardians, peers, self and other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities may refer a student for consideration for gifted educational services.
- Automatic: The gifted department routinely reviews all test data from all schools. Students who score at specified levels on a norm-referenced test or criterion-referenced test as described below shall be considered* automatically for further assessment. Meriwether County School System has established the follow scores on norm-referenced tests as the criteria for automatic referral: A score "exceeds standard" on four of the five subjects tested. *Consideration does not mean that a student must be evaluated.
- Reciprocity: Meriwether County School System serves gifted students who transfer from other Georgia school systems. Documentation of gifted eligibility and parental permission are required. The students are placed in the appropriate class as quickly as possible
Consent for Evaluation
Parents or guardians must give written consent for testing of students who are being considered for gifted education services.
Students are evaluated in four areas: ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation.
The Nomination Form for Parents has an additional column for their observations. There is also a different Permission to Evaluate form. This does not change the process in any way; it just makes reports to the Ga.DOE accurate.

Eligibility
Students will be evaluated with instruments and qualifying scores as described by State Board of Education Policy 160-4-2.38. The compliance with this rule is guided by local board policy IDDD. Written consent from parents or guardians is also necessary before students determined to be eligible for gifted education services can receive these services.
